I read an article recently by the Smiling Gardener. I think the information he provided was profound. You can read his thoughts here but I’ll share the important details.
Animals and humans like to eat healthy plants. We choose the greenest, hardiest vegetable we can find.
Insects and disease eat unhealthy plants. Most of us think that the insects and diseases are making our plants unhealthy, but actually, they are there because our plants are unhealthy (profound right!!?)
When we spray an unhealthy plant we are only getting rid of the insect, we are not providing the plant with anything, so the insect or disease will return. The spray is not helping the plant, but the chemicals we are using can further damage an already ailing plant. Keep spraying and the beneficial insects like ladybugs will not return or lay eggs. Guess what though? Yes, the bad bugs and disease will return.
Keep your soil and plants healthy by tidying the ground and providing proper nutrients to your plants. Learn everything you can about what you plant and what it requires. Find the best possible location for a particular plant, and once planted don’t ignore it’s needs. Whether you’re growing edibles or decorative plants, by keeping your plants happy and healthy you’re discouraging those bad bugs so that you’ll have a healthy garden. If you’re growing edibles, you want the food you feed your family to be the healthiest and vitamin rich it can be.
Happy Gardening
I am very inspired by what you wrote about keeping our plants healthy, especially the edibles. My rosemary hedge seems to always be plagued by mites (?) or some little pest. I will now make sure it is as healthy as possible. Love the images of your garden that you have featured on your blog.

This is really true. We oftentimes think that insects eat our plants (most preferably healthy ones) because they too love this and I, sometimes think that they are also choosy on what they wanna eat. I end up using pesticides to drive off these insects. Thanks for sharing your thoughts Janet. It breaks those old beliefs.

Great article about insects and pesticides. Pesticides are not good for the environment. More and more people are finally realizing this and moving more towards organic gardening. Insects are a pain but it is a way of life.
