My daughter wanted to redo her wall arrangement and use some new favorite pieces of art. We took everything off the wall, leaving it totally blank. This space is approximately 4 1/2 feet square. She got out all the things she was planning to hang and laid them on the bed. This was where we began arranging and ‘playing’ with everything. Without pounding nail holes we were able to see how everything tied together and figure out just where we wanted each item.
We moved things around and changed the grouping until we were satisfied with the balance and proportion. The larger heavier bird print on the bottom left helps anchor the group. We used the open frames throughout the arrangement to distribute the darker tones and used the candelabra on the right as an anchor for the right side.
My daughter had the genius idea to take a quick picture with her iPhone so if we didn’t have the right screw or for some reason something couldn’t get hung right away we’d have our arrangement plans intact. It was a great idea because even as we began hanging we’d lose track of our design plan. By having the phone in hand at the wall, we could quickly look again at our blueprint. We carefully moved each item from the bed to the wall, lining up our arrangement as planned.
I think this arrangement works nicely because we were able to use the three larger items as kind of a base. See how they make the triangle of the grouping and the other smaller objects are distributed throughout. The two gold objects are tucked in among the others. Everything ties together as one wall grouping, yet your eye can enjoy each individual piece.
This is a great way to try a new wall arrangement. By using the bed or the floor, you can quickly see what works together and what doesn’t. Try using objects of different dimension to make the arrangement more full and lively rather than flat. Pull things from other places in your home and bring them up to the wall with shelves or cubes. Practice on the floor and see what you think. When you’re ready to do the hanging you’ll need a good selection of screws, hooks and nails as well as a level and ruler. Try something fresh and new for a simple update to your walls.
Have fun!
Digital cameras are so valuable for things like this or taking a picture before you take something apart to "fix" it so you remember how to put it back together!

I agree! Although I often think about taking the picture when I'm a little to far into my 'repair.' Thanks for the reminder. How did we grow up before digital??
