This winter, we decided to redo our old fireplace. It was originally used brick with a raised, used brick hearth. We had previously built a surround and mantel, which helped, but still didn’t reflect the design or décor in our home, so it was time for a change. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted but ran across a fireplace remodel in a home magazine and loved the long narrow tiles they used.
We set out, searching for the perfect tiles. I didn’t want it to be too dark and heavy looking and I wanted a contemporary look. Our long dreary winters in the northwest are pretty gray and although I wanted neutral, earthy colors, I knew I needed a fresh, crisp look.
We looked at tile stores and online and then while at Home Depot for another project decided to check out the tile aisle. I was amazed at the beautiful selection. There were several combinations of stone and glass but it was really an easy choice for us.
Here’s the pictures and the tips for success:
Demolition
First, all of the hearth bricks were knocked out to see what the sub flooring underneath looked like.
The surround was removed, bricks were toted out.
The bricks on the fireplace were left in place but vacuumed, then a skim coat of mortar was applied. This gave a flat universal surface on which to apply the new tiles.
A template was made of brown paper to replicate the fireplace height, width and opening. The tiles were laid and blue tape was used to show where cuts would be necessary.
Cutting
We rented a tile saw from Home Depot. By having the tiles pre-marked with the cutting areas designated it saved our valuable rental time.
Placement
The tile which came in 12” squares on netting and was applied with white mortar. We used non sanded grout because of the glass tiles.
The finished project is perfect! Really more than I’d imagined. We used simple ceramic tiles for the hearth, which is flush with the floor. The subfloor underneath had to be built up a bit leaving room for the mortar and tile to make it perfectly even.
Although this was a big job, it’s made a huge impact in our living room. Since we did it ourselves and purchased our supplies at Home Depot, we kept the cost down. I’m happy because we have a wonderful new fireplace without the debt. Something to consider when thinking about home remodeling.
I didn't see the original, I really like the change. Where I tend toward a more traditional decor, this works really well with your more contemporary home. I really am intrigued with the glass tile.

Wow, the bricks on the fireplace have gotten better! The template you've made really helped a lot. Without it, that gorgeous fireplace will not even exist! LOL! It's also great that you have the proper tools. Always remember to be careful while using those.
