She: Did you plant peas?? I forgot, maybe because it was so freezing and wet. I was digging around in the garage and found extra if you need any.
Me: I didn’t plant any, but I’d love to. Let’s coordinate our efforts. Isn’t it too sloppy??
She: As I recall I have just looked for an hour between raindrops and dumped them in between sticky saturated soil.
Me: Okay, I can’t find any peas here so bring your extras on over.
She: I got you covered.
So we met that evening and sat at my kitchen table, talking seeds and old gardening ways. Her grandmother soaked the seeds first but I think the rain will soak them plenty. We talked of compost and soil and shared strategies for planting.
We talked of spring and we chatted how some of the harvest never makes it into the house or the canning jar. Things like peas and blueberries and cherry tomatoes are the most delicious when you get to eat them right off the shrub.
The next day I watched the rain soaking the ground and did just what she said; I ran out dodging the raindrops and pushed those little round seeds into the muddy, soggy soil. So began my planting season.
Lauging at this perfect title!!!!
Discovered my parrots go crazy for sugar snap peas, but the dog should never eat any and sleep in the same bedroom with me.
