I took a very cool class the other evening; a printmaking workshop. Collage is the shop that holds the class and has all the supplies. In fact, Collage has supplies for all kinds of arts and craft needs. It’s full of inspiration, suggestions and a fun, knowledgeable staff. The classroom is big, well lit and can accommodate lots of activity.
Our instructor, Suki, gave us the basics and then turned us loose. We started with a soft pink carving block. Some of us had designs in mind, while other cruised the shop for ideas. Soon it was quiet as everyone, armed with their cutting tools, began carving away the rubber to reveal their design.
Once we completed our carving we moved to the big table set up for inking. We used a brayer to ink our design, then printed, first on paper, then on fabric. Every single design looked great. In less than two hours each of us had something fun and quite wonderful to take home.
I carved a clothespin design and will use the fabric to make a new bag for my clothespins. Other students printed their designs on t-shirts, baby onesies and tea towels.
When you come for your class allow extra time for shopping. Students receive a 15% discount on the day of their class. Most of us couldn’t resist and made our purchases after we found out how easy we could create fabric from our own designs. Try a class at Collage and have fun!
